Our presenter, Travis Fawcett, has been a freelance developer working in web applications for over 8 years. His soup of choice is the meaty LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack. He has over three years of Object Orient PHP development utilizing the Zend Framework. With this solid background in Zend Framework, Travis has easily transitioned into a Magento developer.

Since September of last year, Travis has been developing unique Magento sites that required everything from custom theming to full blown custom module creation and modification.

Travis will focus on a brief history of the development of Magento and why it’s gained in popularity. He will then transition into a demo site and highlight key features of the application along with some food for thought before jumping in. Additionally, for those more interested in the theming and coding, Travis will give a brief overview of the file structure, Magento theming, module creation and debugging. Finally he’ll wrap up with how to get started with Magento, the must haves along with what you need to know to avoid common install mistakes.

For more information or Magento help from Travis, he can be reached at http://calltravis.com

RSVP: Introduction to Semantic Technologies

Details:
So, you’re interested enough in Web 3.0/Semantic Web to come to a Meetup. You know that people are talking about it, but you aren’t exactly sure why. What is it really? And what is it not? What’s the value? What are all these acronyms people keep talking about: RDF, OWL, SPARQL? What’s a “triple” and why should you care? Does this have anything to do with “linked data?”

Maybe you already know the answers to these questions, but when you talk about SemWeb to friends and colleagues, they back slowly away… At this Meetup, we’ll address some of these core questions in an easy-to-understand way – even if you have never seen a line of computer code.

Come join Eric Franzon (SemanticWeb.com) for this friendly and fun introduction!

Attendees will learn:
- The basics of core Semantic Technologies
- How the technologies are being used today (and who’s using them)
- More technical folks will also learn some helpful ways to simply and clearly explain Semantic Tech to their favorite business user, web developer, potential investor, or barrista!

Eric Axel Franzon (http://www.linkedin.com/in/ericfranzon) is an executive with experience in highly technical subject areas, business analysis, marketing, communications, and operations.

Eric was one of the founders of the Semantic Technology (“SemTech”) Conference, is VP Community at SemanticWeb.com, and is an Affiliate Analyst with Chris Shipley’s Guidewire Group.

Details:
David Bratvold and Janelle Noble will be speaking about crowdsourcing this Tuesday. From their own personal experiences of what they’ve learned in the industry, they’ll be covering the basics of crowdsourcing, along with detailed case studies, and practical advice. Some of the topics they’ll be discussing:

What, exactly, is crowdsourcing

Different types of crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing companies

How can it help you

Who is crowdsourcing for

Common myths of crowdsourcing

Case studies & examples

It will be an interactive discussion allowing you a chance to ask your crowdsourcing related questions.

David Bratvold is the founder and CEO of Prova, an advertising agency built on crowdsourcing principles. David started Prova in 2008 in order to fix several problems associated with the traditional methods of ad design.

David also founded the #1 site for crowdsourcing news, The Daily Crowdsource, as a way to expand the crowdsourcing industry by educating the public on the pros and cons. The news site has quickly grown to be the #1 site for crowdsourcing news, with such programs as the Crowd Leaders, and Microvolunteering Wednesday.

Janelle Noble is Director of Marketing for Brightidea, the global leader in innovation management. In 2005, Brightidea launched the first online innovation platform designed to improve the effectiveness of any organization’s innovation process.

Join us for this month’s topic and make sure to bring your burning questions for great a discussion on crowdsourcing.
